Professor of Music, Director of Music Technology and Keyboard Studies (7/98-6/11) Responsible for teaching piano and growing the piano major program. Responsible for coordinating, planning, and teaching in the new music technology degree program. Will seek to make graduate transfer connections to other distinguished schools in the area and beyond by personal dialogue, guest artist invitations and master classes and by personal performances in the area and beyond. Will seek to establish a strong piano pedagogy program. Establish a comprehensive group approach to teaching piano in the Community Music School or an affiliate organization. This will facilitate the placing of piano pedagogy students as assistants to receive practical experience in a closely supervised environment. Invite pedagogues from the area to enhance and strengthen the program. Invited Dr. Robert Pace, Professor Emeritus from Teachers College, Columbia University, to do a 2-hour lecture on pedagogy in Spring 1999. Installed and expanded the keyboard lab into a multiuse lab for all core segments of the music department. The lab was been in use since April 2000. Also, new labs for recording arts and electronic music have been established with industry-standard equipment and software. Promote La Sierra University as a host institution for TI:ME certified classes designed for in-service music educators. As a certified instructor for TI:ME (Technology Institute for Music Educators, we will continue offering TI:ME related coursework during summer. This will utilize our keyboard lab beyond traditional uses and provide another outlet for promoting La Sierra University as a musical and technological center for music educators in the Inland Empire. Summer 1999 was the beginning of LSU's affiliation with TI:ME by offering the first of a series of classes. Continue development of Musica Analytica software and related products. Currently looking to spin off an elementary version of the product with specific, elementary level language and musical help. Also, continue to work on courseware and the Introduction to Music book. Musica Analytica version 3.0 for the Mac OSX transition from the old programming code to the new, improved language is ongoing. Musica Analytica is currently shipping version 2.x to both Mac and Windows. The MA Courseware is being bundled with each platform. Expand performing opportunities in the area and beyond. Riverside First Baptist Church 11/92-9/96 Choral Director Responsible for planning music for the liturgical year. Conducted the choir for each Sunday service and other special services. Filled in for organist when they were out. La Sierra University Church 7/98-Present Organist/Chancel Choir Director, Minister of Music (co-minister until 7/11) For the last three years have conducted the Christmas Vespers program, inviting area churches and choirs to collaborate with us. Program included orchestra, handbells, dramatic readings and movement. Responsible for playing Saturday services. Responsible for scheduling the rotation of organists for the year. Responsible for playing during special programs throughout the year, including Thanksgiving, Christmas, La Sierra University Alumni weekend, La Sierra Academy Alumni Weekend, Easter, La Sierra University Minority Convocation, La Sierra University Church’s Festival of Choirs, and La Sierra University Graduation. Developed and added two new courses in music technology: "Synthesizers, Synthesis, and New Technologies in Music Education" and "Intermediate and Advanced Applications of New Technologies in Music Education". These classes not only introduced teachers and students to new electronic instruments and tools, but also helped them to incorporate MIDI, computers, and sound programming in the classroom for a more creative approach to music education. Taught applied synthesizer and piano students. Taught graduate level "Theory and Analysis" which served as a review of undergraduate theory and prepared students for more advanced theoretical applications. The course was designed to incorporate the computer as a tutor for dictation, voice leading, and other areas such as keyboard harmony. Taught Independent Study students who were doing research in music technologies. Taught the technology section of the "Keyboard Pedagogy Institute", working closely with Dr. Robert Pace, Director, in the planning. Conducted research for a new course that discussed and applied new ideas for teaching music using the computer as an interactive helper. This course also dealt with programming and multimedia and its implication on education. Technology Manager and Consultant Responsible for keeping the Music Program up to date with technology and its implementation in the curriculum. Also served as technology consultant for other professors and institutions. Took an active role in expanding the technology program from an applied program to a full course offering (5 new or updated courses in music technologies, not counting workshops and other courses under development) ending in the M.A. or Ed.M. with emphasis on Music Technology. Responsible for writing the proposals which expanded our departmental equipment from 1 computer workstation to 9 workstations including Postscript laser printers and CD-ROM drives. Responsible for writing the proposal and negotiating with a large electronic keyboard manufacturer who facilitated us with over $40,000 in new equipment for a second technology lab. Set up first departmental network outside of the computing department with features such as electronic mail between faculty and the ability for students to share programs and mail with faculty. Served as the Network Administrator. Music Program Assistant Served as assistant to the coordinator of the Music Program. Responsible in overseeing certain administrative positions and tasks such as budgets, purchases, and student inquiries. Also trained new personnel in the use of equipment in the department. Managed all graduate assistant applications and was responsible in setting up a computerized system which enabled us to pay the assistants in a more efficient manner. Member of the selection committee that assigned applied students to their graduate assistant teachers. Designed a database where records of graduate assistants and their respective students were kept together with their appropriate salary information. Trained office personnel in the use of the Apple Macintosh(tm) computer and various business and music software, and managed the use of software by faculty and faculty assistants. Greater New York Academy of SDA 9/88-6/90 Director of the Music Program Responsible for developing curriculum and performing programs for a high school with a large inner city minority population (50% Black, 35-40% Hispanic). Developed two courses in music appreciation for freshmen with emphasis in comprehensive musicianship. Conducted a touring choir which performed more than 11 times outside of the school in the first year. Revived the defunct annual 'Spring Spectacular' show which had not been presented for at least 7 years. Worked closely with other departments, such as English and Drama, to expand the 'Spring Spectacular' into a cultural event not only for students, but for parents and other attendees. First United Methodist Church, Hasbrouck Heights, NJ 1/86-6/91 Minister of Music/Organist Responsible for conducting the senior choir. Developed a program by which the church could become a center of cultural activity in the arts for the community. Play the organ for Sunday services and other special programs. Hosted guest musicians from conservatories such as The Manhattan School of Music and The Juilliard School to perform in the service and Artist Programs. Worked closely with the minister to develop a yearly 'Messiah Sing' for the community, bringing in distinguished musicians from the New York metropolitan area including soloists from places like The Metropolitan Opera, The New York Opera, and other fine performing institutions. Worked closely with the minister to develop an Artist Program which would feature known musical figures and upcoming musicians. Worked with the town's public library to consolidate efforts in making the church a center of cultural activity. Performed extensively throughout the California area in sacred music concerts. ◆ Compositions/Performances ◆ May 2005 - “Our Father,” a new choral composition, was performed at La Sierra University Church and Loma Linda University Church (5/7) and later performed for the Choral Home Concert by the LSU Chamber Singers (5/14) May 2005 - "Padre Nuestro" choral work, performance by the LSU Chamber Singers, October 31, 1998 and May 8, 1999. The composition is a new setting of the Lord's Prayer in Spanish. It integrates elements of Gregorian chant and more modern harmonies for a dramatic effect. A Marimba Octet directed by Gregory Lorenz, from the Manhattan School of Music, first performed the piece in 1988 at the Columbia University Chapel. ◆ Recording Experience ◆ Pianist and arranger for a solo piano CD: In the Footsteps of Jesus. Music was used as backdrop for a video with the same title for the SDA Conference Spanish Evangelist in the Texas conference. The CD will be published late 2002.
